David Brenner, who some have credited as the originator of observational comedy, was a master of the ad lib. No one could shoot from the hip quite like him, and no one sat on Johnny Carson's couch more times than he did.
On this episode of Interview with the Artist, David talked about how comedy helped him get through tough times and deal with tough people; why he saw his sense of humor as a gift as opposed to a talent; why constantly challenging himself as a performer was so important to him; and why he lied about his age for over 40 years.
David Brenner died at his home in New York City on March 15, 2014 at the age of 78. I had the great pleasure of interviewing him a number of times over the years, and this is our very first conversation, which I always remember fondly. RIP David Brenner. Thank you for the laughter.
